A servo drive is made of a controller which sets the speed of a motor in the same way as a frequency converter does. But with a servo drive, the motor sends a signal back to the drive (feedback) about speed or position. The servo drive then compares the difference between the desired value and the actual value. If there is a difference, the servo drive adjusts the speed until these two match. The servo drive is thus far more advanced. Likewise, a frequency converter runs with an asynchronous motor, but a servo drive uses a permanent magnet motor, which is easier to control precisely.

It can be compared to the cruise control on a car, where the car's engine has to work harder up a hill, while it has to be adjusted down if the car is going down a hill.
Servo drives are used in a large number of industries, including the food industry, marine and plastic molding industries.
